About the sport

## Badminton – speed, accuracy and the joy of getting it right

Badminton can mean a gentle hit with a friend or a fast-paced game that seems to use every inch of the court. That is its strength: you can find a pace to suit your group. A light racket, a shuttle flying over the net and a successful return are all you need for a good start.

### A light shuttle, a versatile game

Badminton is played in singles or doubles. Unlike many other racket sports, the shuttle must always be hit before it touches the floor. It slows quickly in flight, so timing and positioning have a big influence on your next shot.

A high shot to the back of the court gives you time to recover a good playing position. A short drop over the net brings your opponent forwards. Alternating between the two keeps the game lively: the next shot may not go where you expect.

### Find your own way to play

In singles, you cover the whole court yourself. Doubles adds teamwork: who takes the shuttle dropping at the front, and how do you cover the back? Both formats keep you moving and give you plenty to think about.

You do not need a powerful smash or clever deception to begin. Once you can return the shuttle over the net with control and recover to a good position after each shot, the game starts to flow. Longer rallies often show your progress better than the scoreboard.

### A comfortable way to get started

Warm up gently and begin with easy shots. Try high clears and short net shots before keeping score. Give each other time to get used to the shuttle’s flight – finding a shared rhythm is usually easier than rushing.

**Beginner’s tip:** try to meet the shuttle in front of you, rather than waiting until it drops behind you. A small early movement makes the shot easier than a big last-minute stretch.

### Badminton in any weather

Mailamestari’s three badminton courts offer year-round play in Iisalmi. Book a session on Playtomic and come along as a pair or a group of four. A good game can be a close match – or simply an hour of enjoyable time together.

Rules of the game

## Badminton rules

In badminton, the aim is to land the shuttle in your opponent’s court or force an error. Always return the shuttle before it touches the floor.

### 1. Choose the right boundaries

Singles uses the inner sidelines, while doubles uses the outer ones. The service courts also differ in length: the doubles service area is shorter at the back. Check the court markings together before you begin.

### 2. Serve diagonally

Serve into the opposite service box. When the serving side’s score is even, serve from the right-hand box; when it is odd, serve from the left. Keep the serve low and controlled. Under official rules, the whole shuttle must be below 1.15 metres at the moment of contact.

### 3. Every rally earns a point

The winner of a rally scores a point and serves next. A game is played to 21 points with a two-point margin. From 20–20, play continues until one side leads by two. At 29–29, the next point wins the game. A match is usually the best of three games.

### 4. A shuttle on the line is in

A shuttle landing on the boundary of the correct playing area is in. A shuttle landing outside the boundaries or hitting the ceiling is a fault. A return into the net or a shuttle falling onto the floor on your side also gives your opponent a point.

### 5. One hit at a time

The same side must not hit the shuttle twice in succession. Do not touch the net with your racket or body while the shuttle is in play. In doubles, call early to say who will take the shuttle and make sure your partner has room to swing.
